Manhattan Rye

Rye had not been produced in New York for over 80 years, but Tuthilltown Spirits’ HUDSON MANHATTAN RYE WHISKEY signals the return of the quintessential New York Whiskey. Tuthilltown whiskeys are the only legally distilled and aged grain spirits produced in New York since Prohibition. Imagine that. It's a great story with a nostalgic return of the classic American spirit; each 92 proof bottle hand filled, capped, waxed and numbered.

Tuthilltown Spirits even distributed in Europe.

Holiday Snack

Roasting in New York City since 1886, A. L. Bazzini has been supplying Yankee Stadium with peanuts since its inaugural game against the Red Sox in 1923, and it is the nutroaster of choice for the finest restaurants and hotels, including the Waldorf Astoria, and Four Seasons. As far back as 1945, generous Bazzini 4-pound Elephant Tins have supplied the best kitchens.

Need a great snack in under 1 hour? And- with no concerns about added holiday fat intake, like the usual snack mix with butter. Make another viewer favorite and most requested party snack is my seasoned spiced nuts recipe. My recipe, roasted in the oven with egg whites, that's sans the butter!

I’ve listed options to mix-in with the nuts if you want to put your own spin on my holiday snack. Oh, and BTW- it makes a great hostess/ host gift when wrapped up in clear cello bags with a festive ribbon.

Lifestyle Food Trends Review

December First is here. Before we jump into 2010, let's take a look at my 2009 Top 10 Lifestyle Food Trends posted back in January 2009 and see how I did.

At first glance, I stayed pretty much on target. OK, so South African wines didn't become wine leading importer to the US; but I've felt really good about the quality of their wines ever since I first sampled them in South Africa in the late 80s. As for the rest of my picks, I was pretty much on target. Have a look for yourself- only 31 days 'til 2010. Next month I'll pass along my Top Ten Lifestyle Food Trends for 2010.

Bene! Balsamic Vinegar

Hmm, for $200 you can purchase a 25 year old traditional balsamic vinegar from Modena. But what's on the shelf for let's say $5 or so? First, let's review what you are looking at and what we will use it for. Certified balsamic vinegar is only produced in Modena and Reggio Emilia in Italy. Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena is prohibitively expensive, with a 100ml bottle costing over $80. Yikes! Hold that thought. Use it for salads or glaze over fresh fruit. I've topped pre-dressed and plated-salads with a few drops of good Balsamic and also reduced it for BBQ sauces to more refined sauces. But it truly shines when used as an ingredient for dessert. In Modena it is popular to drizzle it over Parmigiano Reggiano, or add a few drops over berries and melon as a dessert. Ok, now back to the more than $80 bucks a bottle. I discovered a brand called Via Roma for less than $5 and yes, it's a product of Modena! Available at A&P, A&P Waldbaum's, The Food Emporium, and SuperFresh. Great find!
